Closing Farm Bill ‘Loophole’ Would Help Hemp Industry ‘Thrive,’ Minnesota AG Says

Attorney General Keith Ellison Supports Minnesota’s Hemp Edible Market

Attorney General Keith Ellison reaffirmed his support for Minnesota’s hemp edible market after joining a letter urging Congress to ban synthetic THC products.

Letter to Congress on Synthetic Hemp Derivatives

On October 24, Ellison led a letter signed by 39 state and territorial attorneys general requesting Congress to criminalize products containing synthetic hemp derivatives. The letter focused on closing a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill that has allowed intoxicating hemp-derived THC products to flood communities nationwide.

The letter called on federal lawmakers to clarify the definition of hemp, aiming to ban products with “intoxicating levels of THC – of any kind and no matter how it is derived,” without specifying what that federal definition should be.

Clarification on Ellison’s Position

Five days later, on October 29, Ellison addressed confusion caused by the letter and clarified his stance.

“First, I am and will remain a supporter of Minnesota’s THC edible industry that follows state law, supports businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs across Minnesota, and creates products that people enjoy,” Ellison wrote in a Substack post. “One of the primary reasons I signed onto the letter is to ensure this industry continues to thrive.”

Summary

Ellison’s action aims to protect Minnesota’s legal hemp THC industry while advocating for federal measures to block synthetic THC products harmful to communities.
