Pakistan secured a thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa in the first One-Day International on Tuesday in Faisalabad. The hosts survived a late collapse to clinch the match in the final over at Iqbal Stadium.
Pakistan appeared in control at 241 for 4 while chasing 264 but stumbled as South Africa captured four wickets for just 22 runs, creating a nail-biting finish. Entering the last over with four runs needed and three wickets remaining, Pakistan lost Mohammad Nawaz on the third ball with the scores level. Tail-ender Naseem Shah then managed a quick single to secure the win and give Pakistan a 1–0 series lead.
“That always happens in cricket but we'll try to make it not happen again,” said Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi. “It was a special occasion of cricket returning to Faisalabad so we are happy that we won.”
This match marked the return of international cricket to Faisalabad after 17 years. The remaining two ODIs are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday, also at the same venue.
Earlier, Pakistan bowled out South Africa for 263 in 49.1 overs despite strong starts from openers Quinton de Kock and teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who both scored half-centuries.
“I think we were 20–30 runs short,” said South Africa’s stand-in captain Matthew Breetzke. “We lost wickets in clusters but still there are a lot of positives.”
Pakistan edged South Africa by two wickets in a tension-filled ODI at Faisalabad, celebrating the city’s long-awaited return to hosting international cricket.
