Staff at an Arizona high school have been targeted with online harassment and death threats following inaccurate claims about their Halloween costumes. A spokesperson from Turning Point USA wrongly accused a group of teachers of mocking the assassination of TPUSA cofounder Charlie Kirk through their attire.
On Friday, the math department at Cienega High School wore matching white T-shirts stained with fake blood and the phrase “Problem Solved” in black letters. A photo of the group was shared on the Vail School District’s official Facebook page. According to the district superintendent, John Carruth, no complaints came from students or parents during the school day.
The situation escalated when Andrew Kolvet, executive producer of Charlie Kirk’s show, posted the photo on X, claiming it showed teachers mocking Kirk’s murder. He wrote:
“Concerned parents just sent us this image of what's believed to be teachers in [Vail School District] mocking Charlie's murder. They deserve to be famous, and fired.”
Kolvet implied the bloodied T-shirts resembled those worn by Kirk when he was assassinated at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10.
District officials have emphasized that no students or parents raised concerns on the day the photo was taken. The claims made by the TPUSA spokesperson have been disproven as inaccurate.
“No student or parent complained about the costumes during the school day,” said John Carruth, superintendent of Vail School District.
Summary: False accusations by a political group led to severe online harassment and threats against innocent teachers who wore Halloween costumes, sparking concern about misinformation's real-world consequences.
